So You're Thinking of Leaving America
From an American who's lived in Paris long enough to become French
Things are obviously getting nuts. I didn’t realize I was paraphrasing Lenin in this video but his words seem germane:
“There are decades where nothing happens; and there are weeks where decades happen.”
I won’t make predictions as to where we’re headed, although my friend Lindsey (whose Substack you should subscribe to) and I read a book last year that has been both helpful and disconcerting: The Fourth Turning is Here. Helpful to know we’ve been here before, but scary for all the reasons it always is.
Anyway, if you’re thinking of moving abroad, most of what I share here is applicable even if you aren’t making a move to France specifically. My experience at this point is very Paris-heavy, though I’ve lived in a handful of countries and spent the majority of my adult life on this side of the Atlantic. I hope it finds the right people and is of some help and comfort!
As always, more peeks into Parisian life to come.

I'll be in Paris the first week in April. Might look for long-term rentals.
Thanks for this honest report. I am an American who is turning 70 this Spring and feeling I am too old to consider a move, especially one this challenging. My kids and teenage granddaughters have considered it though, which could make a difference. In the meantime, I do plan on spending my big birthday in Paris. I am curious about Parisians attitudes towards Americans. When I was there in 2017 I wore a small white button with the red circle and line through the name of our now again president. What should I do, be prepared for?
